The Embassy — taking into consideration our video production experience with Switzerland Global Enterprise — contracted PAPER & PAGE to produce an animated “Swiss-Thai Friendship” video in celebration of the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Thailand.

THE PROBLEM

THE PROBLEM

THE PROBLEM
Good diplomats find the best compromises. H.E. Pedro Zwahlen, Ambassador of Switzerland to the Kingdom of Thailand, was a strong creative force and pushed to adopt a more whimsical and humorous tone in order to strike a balance with the stately subject matter.
As our creative team came together to develop the script, we also realized that the Swiss-Thai Friendship Video had to not only cherish the past but give hope for the future.
And there was a lot of ground to cover: in addition to broader areas like formal treaties, economic collaboration, sustainability cooperation, and education, the Swiss Embassy also wanted to incorporate specific references that would help the video stand out without naming any brands or organizations.

THE SOLUTION
THE SOLUTION
How do you unite past, present, and future?
Time travel, naturally.
In close coordination with H.E. Zwahlen, we anchored the video through a central
character exploring Swiss-Thai relations through the ages using a time machine à
la Back to the Future, swapping the DeLorean for an electric MINI Cooper — the
actual diplomatic vehicle used by the Swiss ambassador.

THE STORYBOARD
The likeness of the Swiss Embassy in Bangkok and its use of solar energy and electric vehicles inspired some of the details of the opening scene.
We also incorporated details from the modified DeLorean used in the Back to the Future film franchise.

Scenes taking place in the past depict stylized outfits inspired by 17th century garments and traditional Thai architecture. In the present, we took inspiration from real-life monuments as well as the Swiss-Thai Chamber of Commerce (STCC) office built from a recycled shipping container.
The electric MINI Cooper takes viewers on a literal timeline, balancing important treaties and trade goods with light-hearted tourist destinations and cultural exchange.
TWO MAJOR CONCERNS DOMINATE
THE FUTURE: OUR CHILDREN AND
OUR ENVIRONMENT.
Scenes of the future are represented by programs that look to the future, such as education & research scholarships and EV projects being pioneered with Swiss funding in Thailand.

We worked closely with the Swiss Embassy to develop the narrative of Swiss-Thai relations in the video, adopting the concept of “combining tradition and innovation.”
